The Hotel Atlantic began the full renovation of 220 rooms and suites in 2010. Overall project management and construction supervision for the architectural and interior work, the coordination of all planners involved in this rehabilitation, and the detailed design were carried out by Büro Korb.
In the first phase of construction, lasting until May 2011, 140 rooms and suites were renovated. Another 80 followed by April 2012 in the second construction phase.
The design draws on the over 100-year history of this institution as a grand hotel for passengers aboard the transatlantic luxury liners and on Hamburg as a gateway to the world. A range of different décor worlds can be seen on the individual floors. The second floor is inspired by Africa, with earthy shades and colours of the desert. On the third floor, blue shades and glimmering silver ornaments on brocade remind one of Europe’s Belle Époque. Vivid shades of violet and large-scale geometric patterns on the fourth floor are a reference to the Art Deco of 1930s America. On the fifth floor, red and gold shades and silk fabrics dominate as an homage to Asia. In the Atlantic Suite, over 100 square metres in area, the modern luxury of this grand hotel is shown to full advantage with its hand-made, extra soft carpeting, and curtains made of Rubelli silk and other materials of high quality, in combination with modern art and designer furniture.
Hundreds of skilled craftsmen ran 75 km of new cables, among other things, replaced 900 doors and 300 windows, renovated more than 12,000 square metres of floor space, and mounted 7800 switches and sockets, as well as 230 wall lights and chandeliers. The work by numerous teams of experts and craftsmen was coordinated by Büro Korb while the hotel continued its day-to-day operations. This open heart surgery on the “Grande Dame” only succeeded due to the high level of motivation on the part of everyone involved, in view of the highly demanding construction assignment at hand and the history of this institution.
