In a new building with six condominiums on Hamburg’s Elbchaussee directly on the slope of the Elbe River is the apartment that Büro Korb designed for a couple from Wiesbaden. The clients had purchased the approx. 180 sqm apartment in shell condition and commissioned Büro Korb with the floor plan as well as the complete design and implementation planning of all permanently installed fixtures and furniture.

The key design task was to create a home for the couple, who travel a lot both professionally and privately and have a wide variety of images from all over the world in their heads. On the one hand, the home should create a link to the new place of residence, Hamburg, and on the other hand, it should reflect the impressions gathered on their travels. This resulted in a mixture of Hanseatic and maritime, down-to-earth to almost rustic and exotic elements.

Floor plan design
One of the clients’ wishes was to be able to look out over the Elbe from both the bed and the bathtub and shower.
This resulted in an angled arrangement of the bedroom and bathroom – relative to the house floor plan – as a large tree in front of the house prevents a direct view. The slant is particularly evident in the spacious entrance area, which tapers towards the living room. As soon as you enter the apartment, you are straight led into the rooms facing the Elbe.

Interior design and materials
The clients’ diverse style and material ideas were implemented separately in the individual rooms. The office/guest room has a dignified Hanseatic feel with an alcove and maritime quotations, the kitchen is down-to-earth rustic, and the bedroom and bathroom have a rather opulent character with a lush mix of materials and patterns. A continuous floor covering of oak planks ties the various themes together.
An equally common feature is that all the materials used are high-quality and luxurious. The walls, for example, are partly covered with wooden panels made of precious woods, partly covered with silk or trowelled in Italian marble flour technique. A wall niche in the living room was covered with ray skin. The closet doors in the bedroom are covered with goat parchment. Swarovski crystals were used in several places in the apartment, such as in the carpet in the bedroom, on various light switches and fixtures, and on some furniture handles.
