The villa was built in 1922/23 according to designs by architect Walther Hinsch and was listed as part of the ‘Kanalisierte Alster’ ensemble in 2013. The Alster canalization was carried out according to plans by Fritz Schumacher, Hamburg’s construction director and architect at the time. It followed his concept for an ‘Alsterstadt’ to create attractive building land for upper middle-class house building.

The building – executed in brick – has a rather traditionalist design language. Plain triangular gables and columns are among its few neoclassical decorative elements.

In the 2000s, the villa had stood empty for several years. The far-reaching structural measures associated with the redevelopment – in the static area, for example, the replacement of numerous beams and ceiling panels – were due to the long-term consequences of a bomb hit in World War II, as well as the new room layout specified by the client.

The remodeling work began in early 2015, and when our office took over the project during ongoing operations in November 2015, about 70% of the structural work had been completed.

In addition to a self-supporting elliptical steel staircase connecting all floors, the terrazzo floors on the first floor and the warm water wall heating system on all floors for ecological reasons are special structural features.
